It's time to "scale" the final project for our oceanography unit. You will be creating a fantasy fish and will tell about it as though you are an adventurous, expert oceanographer making a report to your colleagues! This will consist of three parts, please read the descriptions so that the instructions are not "fishy", but clear.

WRITTEN REPORT - 35 points

You will be creating a new fish, designed to live in an assigned environment. You will now make up a fictional fish for the fantasy aquarium. (It's not a real fish.)

Part of the project will be a written report that will tell about the magnificent "find" that you have made. You will use the same outline that you used for the real fish report. You will be given the opportunity to be very creative, yet your information must be grounded in good scientific thinking. That means, make it entertaining, but be sure your fish could really live in the habitat that you are assigned. We will be looking for special adaptations that give your fish the ability to survive and thrive in the area that you are assigned. Entertain and astound us with your good work!

THE MODEL -10 points

You will also make 3D model of your fish. These models will be placed in our classroom "aquarium" to be admired by all. The models should be no larger than a shoe box. They can be made of stuffed butcher paper, construction paper, or any other supplies that you'd like to use at home. They should accurately depict the fish you have described in your report.

Include an index card that tells the common name, scientific name and discoverer's name (that's you!), the scale of the model as compared to the "real" fish, and a small picture at the top. -- SEE THE EXAMPLE IN CLASS.

THE PRESENTATION - 10 points

You will be given class time to present your "discovery" to the rest of the class. You will receive a speech grade for your presentation. Please do not read your report, but tell about your fish with enthusiasm. You may use visual aids. You will be videotaped.
