The Mummy’s Curse

There it was, King Tut’s mummy. Excitement takes over me as I think that I am the first one to see his mummy. I looked around at the burial room of King Tut. CLANK, CLANK. I suddenly looked around the room and saw nothing, but then it was when I saw it. The lid of King Tut’s coffin came right off. I didn’t stay to see what had happened or if I was just dreaming. I just ran right out of that room out into the Valley of the Kings and right to the entrance of the Valley. When I reached there I looked around and couldn’t believe what I saw. All the mummies in the Valley of the king’s were coming out of their tombs and right out into the open, they had all arisen from the dead, or just waked up?

That was how king Tut’s curse started, many years passed since that cursed day. Since it has been so long that the curse is just a mere myth. Only the old and wise still knew what it is really was, but we were all going to figure out that it was really a reality!

Then, one day, a kid came from the Valley of the Kings that looked just like King Tut. Men from the village told him to take of his costume and he did. Underneath he was wrapped in bandages just like a mummy. "Ahhhhhh! It is the mummy of king Tut arisen from the dead!" said an old wise man, knowing the troubles that might lay ahead. Everybody ran straight out of there and out of sight. It was told later that King Tut went straight to the Pharaoh and told him the secrets of lords. Then King Tut took over as pharaoh of Egypt. He ruled for many years without question of leadership. Then, strangely, one year, he suddenly dropped on the floor and became a mummy again. He was then buried, but there in everybody’s head loomed the mystery of the Mummy’s Curse!

Diana 1/10/01      The Mummy’s Curse

In a dark passageway of Tutankhamen’s tomb, Howard Carter breaks through a sealed door. Unaware of the danger that was near, he walks through the tomb admiring the golden walls. The mummy awakens from the disturbance of his afterlife.

"Who dares to enter my Three Thousand Years of Paradise, to awaken the king, the Pharaoh, the might Tutankhamen?" shouted a voice that echoed through the tomb.

The scientist and Howard Carter stopped in their tracks. They started to step back and reach for the door, paralyzed with fear. They ran for their lives and never told anybody about the incident.

They will come back, thought the mummy, or bring other people.

"Revenge!" he shouted and evilly laughed.

Using his magical powers, he put a curse on the tomb: The next person to open the tomb will die a painful death.

MANY YEARS LATER……….........

In a quiet library, a young scientist stood looking at the books lined on the shelf.

"There’s got to be something here", exclaimed a young, dark-haired scientist named Diana.

Her friends, Christine, Aileen, Lisa, and So Yeon had come with her. They were all scientists that went to the library to research on Egypt. The tall, dark-haired scientists searched the shelves for books. Diana had been looking for books about Egypt. There was a curse on the tomb, the tomb of King Tut, and Diana wanted to see if it was true. The curse was only a rumor. Diana had a love for adventure and was set on figuring out the mystery: If the curse was real. She learned that long before, someone else had opened the tomb.

"Why do you want to find it? It’s curse! Are you crazy? Haven’t you heard all about the different things that can happen to you if you become cursed?" exclaimed Lisa, who was tall, dark-haired, and really smart. She leaned back in her chair.

"I think it will be fun. Besides this book says that the guy who actually opened the tomb died peacefully in his bed", pointed out Diana.

She read from the book aloud:

Howard Carter, who actually opened the tomb, lived to the comfortable age of sixty-six and died peacefully in his home in England. Lord Carnavon died mysteriously from a mosquito’s bite and a barber nicked the bite and it became infected.

" How about the mosquito bite? Explain that," said Lisa.

" Maybe on accident. You could get bitten by a mosquito any day, any time, any where." said Aileen.

"Well, who’s with me and who’s not?" asked Diana.

No one said word. Silence hit the library

"All right! Let’s get packing. Egypt, here we come!"

HOURS LATER IN EGYPT……………………..

The flight had been horrible. Their flight had been delayed several times, they had all gotten sick, gotten lost at the airport, and now they were stuck, wondering where to go. Lisa said that the curse was going for them now because they come to Egypt and arrived safely. Diana said they didn’t have good luck with them right now, but things would shape up.

But when the girls arrive in Egypt, they are stunned by how magnificent it looked.

"So, what are suppose to do now?" asked So Yeon, " Now that we’re in Egypt, how do we start?"

" Well, there’s this guy I talked to and he’s suppose to meet us and take to a part of Egypt where he thinks the tomb was found," answered Diana, " I just don’t know where he’s going to be."

"That’s a lot of help. Now we’re stuck in Egypt", complained Christine," and I am so thirsty, I could drink the whole ocean."

"Oh, yeah. It gets really hot here, so we have to drink a lot of water to keep from dehydrating," said Lisa.

"Did you say stuck?" boomed a voice behind them.

The girls jumped and turned around.

"Funny…You sound exactly like the guy I was talking to on the phone," trailed off Diana.

"Maybe I am," the man said smiling.

He was a tall young man with shorts and a T-shirt. His light brown hair shimmered in the light.

"I’m Ray. I’m studying Egypt. I hope you find what you’re looking for. Ready for your trip? It might be dangerous," warned Ray.

"We’re ready for anything!" they exclaimed.

Ray led them to car that was bright red.

"Here’s my car. Hop in and we’ll leave," said Ray.

"Umm, Lisa, why is your bag so heavy?" Diana asked as she heaved Lisa’s bag into Ray’s trunk.

"I’ve got a laptop computer to look information we need, and clothes, and other stuff," said Lisa.

"No wonder!" Diana exclaimed.

"Let’s hit the road!" said Ray.

"Well, since we haven’t introduced ourselves. I’m Aileen, that’s So Yeon, and that’s Lisa, and that’s Christine," explained Aileen.

"And you know who I am, right?" said Diana as she hopped into the car and slammed the door.

"Yep. Climb in." replied Ray.

"So, how do you know where this tomb is?" asked So Yeon.

"Well, my dad tried to figure out and he did pretty good. He died before he even got the chance to go look," Ray said sadly.

"See! It’s part of the curse. You know about the curse on King Tut’s tomb," exclaimed Lisa.

"Yeah. Everybody around here knows about it. My mom thought the same thing. But my dad encouraged me to figure out the rest." said Ray, "So I did. Howard Carter helped me."

"I thought he died already," said Christine.

"He wrote some books about it and I read them all." said Ray.

Lisa started to type on her computer. She looked up ‘Howard Carter’ and it showed that Howard Carter had written a book about the finding of the tomb.

"Seems to me, he had a hard time finding it though," said Lisa.

"I also used some maps to locate where it could be. Lord Carnavon had drawn maps and I used those too." said Ray, "When we get there, there should be a helicopter waiting for us, that way we won’t have to walk a million miles to the tomb."

When they got to the waiting place, all they can see was sand. The desert was hot and dry. The team put on sunscreen, hats, and backpacks with thing they might need: medicine in case they got stung by a scorpion and a lot of water. They climbed into the helicopter and were off.

HOURS LATER…………

"There is nothing here", shouted Christine over the loud noises of the helicopter.

"What’s that thing down there?" asked Diana pointing to a pyramid that stood in the open desert.

"That might be it," shouted Ray," Land!"

As the helicopter lowered to the ground, they looked around the area of the tomb. The Nile River was clearly seen in the background and seemed like a blue, long snake moving along the sandy desert. They jumped off the helicopter and walked towards the tomb.

"Wow! Look at this. It looks like hieroglyphics. What does it say, Lisa?" asked Aileen.

"Exactly what you think it says," she said grinning, already had figured out the foreign writing.

"All right!" "Yes!" "We did it!"

They jumped for joy.
"What are we waiting for? Let’s go!" said Christine.

"How do we know if it safe?" asked Diana. She had this weird feeling something bad was going to happen. Something really bad. Something that might hurt them in any way. She felt tense and nervous.

"You’re the one who wanted to come and now you’re backing out! Come on! Don’t be a chicken," they exclaimed.

"Can’t you feel it? There seems to be something watching us. I feel like someone watching our every move. Someone’s here with us. We’re not alone," Diana said shakily.

Lisa said," Diana is right. I can feel it too. This isn’t a good idea."

They all stood still.

"Now that you said it, I’m scared," Christine said tensely.

"Right," they all agreed.

"Let’s go and just figure it out on the map were it is back home," suggested So Yeon.

In the pyramid, the mummy had awoken to the noises outside. So, they got past my curses at the airport. Well, try to leave now and I won’t let them.

"We better leave," said Ray.

Not so fast, thought the mummy wickedly, not before I have some fun with you. Using his magical powers, magical scorpions appeared. "Get them," he ordered sharply. The scorpions hurried away.

"Wh-what is that noise" Lisa asked.

They all turned around and screamed. A huge herd of scorpions were coming towards them.

"Help!" they screamed.

Diana watched in fear as she watched Christine collapsed to the ground.

"Ow! I think I got stung," Christine said in pain, clutching her leg.

Diana could feel herself panicking and thought of something quick. She grabbed Christine and pulled her into the helicopter. She pulled out the medicine for the stings and instructed Christine to drink it. Taking off her backpack, she took out the water bottles that they had packed. Using them like water guns, she shot a stream of water at the galloping scorpions. They disappeared right when the water hit them. The others quickly saw what she was doing. They copied her actions and the scorpions soon disappeared.

Nooooo, thought the mummy, the water has ruined my magic. I will get them next time. He silently slipped back into his coffin.

"Oh my gosh! I ‘ve never been so frightened in my whole entire life." Aileen exclaimed.

"Good idea, Diana," they said congratulating her.

"But how did it work? It either magic or a long explanation," said So Yeon.

"Maybe that’s the reason scorpions live in the desert instead of near the water. Maybe because they’ll drown or something," answered Lisa.

" Let’s leave this cursed place," Diana and Christine answered back shuddering.

They hopped back in the helicopter and headed back to the waiting area where they had started.

"Lisa, you were right, this place was cursed," said Christine.

"Well, where do you want to go now?" asked So Yeon.

"What kind of question is that? Where I would like to go is back home to the lab", Aileen replied.

"What about Hawaii? There isn’t any really bad curses there or is there?"

How Cheetah Got Its Spots by Brittney

Once upon a time, a long time ago, Cheetah was all yellow and very beautiful. He was very greedy indeed. All the other animals hated him. He always stole food from the animals and things he likes from animal’s home.

One day Cheetah was walking through the woods and he was started to get tired and hungry. But Cheetah just walked on, until he came to a small cottage in a clearing of a meadow. He walked to the door and knocked. A little old lady opened the door and asked,"How may I helped you?"

The cheetah replied back, "I’m so tired and hungry, will you give me some food to eat and somewhere to rest?"

Katie LA10-23-00       A First Sight

I can remember the first time I saw my small dog Scooter. It was a warm day in August and the sun shone very bright. Only a few days before I had arrived in San Diego from a vacation in humid Florida. I was nervous as I walked up the paved driveway to a man’s house. Would the dog like me? Would he be the one for me? The man opened the door for me, once he saw me. His house smelled unpleasantly of wet dogs. Then I heard a loud bang and a small dog (a mix of Carine Terrier and Bichon Frise) came charging at me. His matted hair shook as he ran. He was totally wild. He knocked me down and licked me hard. I knew he was the one for me.

Why There Are Colors by Jennifer

Long time ago, there was the mighty God Kafua and Goddess Loreighna. That time nothing had color. Everything was as blank as a piece of glass: you couldn’t see anything.

Kafua and Loreighna wee sad. Especially Loreighna. She wore robes that had the colors of the world.

Kafua and Loreighna worked viciously to find out how to add colors to the world. They tried spells, charms, magic, enchantments, and curses. Some of them worked, but only awhile. The magic wore off as fast as lightning. The enchantments wore off as fast as thunder. As for the charms and curses, they didn’t work at all. The sells just bounced off objects and nearly hit Kafua.

But nothing could last forever. Not even the creators of the world. Loreighna was sick with fever. Kafua tried everything he could to cure Loreighna. Nothing worked. Her illness was fatal.

A few hours before Loreighna went to sleep forever, she sensed that she would not live much longer. So she told Kafua, " If I decease, you must burn my body and all the cloth I ever wove and spread my ashes among the earth." " Fine.’ He agreed.

She was found dead the next dawn. He did as she told him. He cremated her. Then he spread her ashes everywhere. Strange as it seems, once her ashes touched the land, everything became colorful.

So from that day on, everything had color.

CURSE OF THE TOMBS

"Heads up", yelled Scott as he knocked rocks from the top of an ancient tower that he was excavating. "Ouch", joked Tommy, "hey Scott, the dig organizer wants to see you." Scott walked into the tent and sat down at the boss’s desk. "I have an assignment for you and your team." said the boss. "What is it?" asked Scott. "Well, we need a team to search this tomb that we recently found." Explained Steve the boss. " Let me think about it", said Scott.

A First Sight by Shannon

As we walked out of my grandparents home in L.A., (that was still smelling of delicious strawberry pie), 5 lean, little kittens bounded up to us as we heard many whispered meows in the crisp feeling, night air. A few kittens ran under our sleek, gray van. One was black with one white paw, another brown and black speckled. Another kitten ran away, I saw that, that kitten was fluffy and yellow. Then it happened. The cool air rubbed against my face, my grandmother's pie still scented the air, and a slender kitten of blended colors; yellow, brown, and black, with white paws, ran up to me, and meowed silently, staring at my face.
It lay in my arms, so small and filthy, it's fur stuck between my fingers. I carried it back to the car, noticing my sister carrying an all black cat she later named Binx. We drove away; my sister, brother, father, mother and I, with our new kittens, Sandy (my cat), and Binx, (my sister's cat).

The First Time I Ever Saw Snow

The first time I ever saw snow was when I was about 6 years old. When we were going up the mountain, I noticed that my ears were starting to get plugged up. When we got even further up the mountain, I started to really feel cold. Then I saw that the trees had started to change. I finally saw the snow when we were 3/4th up the mountain. At the top, the air was frigid. "I’m going to get frostbite", I said to myself. But, I had fun when we were having a snowball fight. When I tasted the pure white snow, it tasted just like frozen water.

Fantasy Fish Report

A new species of fish have been found along the coasts of California. In the kelp beds of California, lives the amazing kelp fish. The species was hard to find because of its natural ability to camouflage itself among the waving kelps. It is called the kelp fish because it looks exactly like kelp.

There is plenty of light where the kelp fish lives. The water is warm in the neritic zone where it lives. The water is about 100 ft deep where it stays among the kelp.

The kelp fish is called the kelp fish because it looks like a piece of kelp. It has short fins so it can swim. When it is hiding among the kelp, it folds its fins against itself and the fins seem invisible. It stands straight up and down while hiding in the kelp.

It eats small fish and plants. It has sharp teeth that break open animals with shells. It looks for its food near the bottom of the kelp beds, so it competes for the same foods and habitat with bottom dwelling animals and fish. It would most likely be a predator.

When the kelp fish feels there is danger near or when it is frightened, it darts toward some kelp to hide. Its kelp-like body camouflages it. Sometimes crowds of kelp fish come together and they look like a stalk of kelp.

The kelp fish lays its eggs on the kelp. Then they leave the eggs. When the kelp fish is born, it is a shade of light green and looks like a small piece of kelp. For several weeks, the kelp fish will feed on the kelp till it is ready to go off on its own.

This amazing kelp fish was hard to discover because of its excellent camouflage. Scientist hopes to learn more about this fish. So when you are looking at a kelp stalk, look closely to see the eye of the kelp fish looking around or if it is just kelp.

Bat Rays

A bat ray, myliobatis californica, is a type of ray with a diamond-shaped body. They come from a family of rays called Myliobatidae. Their relatives include sharks, skates, stingrays, mantas, and eagle rays. Some scientists say that rays involved from sharks. Although sharks and rays do not look alike, they are cousins. Rays belong to a group called Elasmobranchii.

Bat rays lives in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, along the borders of Oregon to the Gulf of California. They are found at the depth of 150 ft. below the surface of the water, in the neritic zone. There is plenty of light in the surface zone where it lives. They are found in muddy bays, rocky bottoms, and kelp beds.

Bat rays are identified by their black, flattened, diamond-shaped bodies. They have a long stinger that is a venomous tail spine that can inflict serious injury. They have bat like wings that can grow to 6 ft. in wingspan. Their skeleton is not made of bones, but made of a material called cartilage. They can weigh over 100 pounds. Bat rays have strong, flat teeth for eating shelled animals. They do not have a colored underside because they are usually on the seabed and the underside is so rarely seen. They have ten gill slits all together on their underside. Their cheerful "face" on the underside of the bat ray is really the nostrils and mouth. They move around by flapping its bat like wings.

Bat rays diet is clams, crabs, worms, shrimp, fish, mollusks, and other bottom dwelling invertebrates. They hunt near or on the sea bottom. All rays are said to be carnivors. They are mostly considered a predator.

Bat rays have a stinger that it usually uses only when it is frightened or bothered. When it hides in the sand, it becomes difficult to see. When hunting for food, it beats its wings against the sandy bottom and unearths worms and calms that are hidden.

Bat rays do not lay eggs, but bear them alive. They swim to bays and tidal marshes in June or July. There, they have their babies. The babies emerge tail first with its wing wrapped around its body. Bat rays live for a long time, but produce fewer offspring than most other kinds of fishes.

Rays are some of the largest fishes in the sea. There are 500 different living species of rays and skates. There are many more species of sharks.
