Here's the Story
Our classroom budget has suddenly been increased tremendously!
We can afford to take the whole class on a tour of the Indus Valley! Pack
your bags and take a trip of a lifetime. Take this wonderful tour, enjoy this
fascinating land and history of its people.
Think about
Why would people settle in this land? What does it have that
is good for a civilization? What would it have been like to live in an ancient
culture in the Indus Valley?
Exploring the
Web & The Task
Tour the ancient Indus civilization with
one of its foremost scholars, Jonathan Mark Kenoyer.
While you are online, answer the following questions:
1. Describe the Bullock cart and the flat
bottomed boat in slide #2.
2. In slide #4 there is a photo of terraced
fields. This is an "adaptive strategy of agriculture" What are
they adapting their farming to, why do they have terraced fields?
3. What are some of the natural resources that
are gained from the Himalayas in slide #5?
4. In
slide 6, what are the two natural resources from the Chitral Valley, and what are their
uses? Why do you think the rock was traded as far away as Egypt and
Mesopotamia?
5. What do
the archaeologists think was the purpose of the Great Bath in slide #8?
6. How did
the builders of Mohenjo-daro keep the houses cool in the hot weather in slide #10?
7. Describe the weights in slide #21. What do archaeologists believe
they may have been used for?
8. List some of the animals that are found on slides #24- 37.
When you have finished the tour, chose one of these follow-up activities:
Design a seal for yourself in the style of the ancient Mohenjo-daro seals.
Make a triptych (3 paneled colored illustration) of different environments that
you saw in the Indus Valley.
Make your own set of weights out of clay, that could be used on a balance to
measure mass.
