Online Student Projects

Global Goodwill Holiday Project - From Scholastic, read about holidays around the world, and then add to the "Gift Box Message" board with a holiday wish for world peace or share about your holiday customs. (Great incentive to read and respond to global audience, any grade level)

Online Shopping Spree - Students "shop" online and keep track of purchases using a spreadsheet program.  Estimating, review of place value, finding an average, use of graphs, computer skills with spread sheets are practiced. (PUSD standards included, grades 5 and up)

Celebrating Chanukah - Students learn about the significance of the holiday of Hanukkah, and the teachings of Judaism. They answer questions and do games and puzzles to reinforce they have learned. (PUSD standards included, grades 4 and up)

European Christmas - Students learn about the Christian holiday of Christmas as it is celebrated in Europe.  They label a map, develop icons, record research on a graphic organizer.  Then they invent and write about a holiday custom of their own.   (PUSD standards included, grades 5 and up)

Cookie the Magic Rabbit - This online story for  younger students allows them to add their names (first only) to be part of the story. (no standards attached, grades 3-5)

Looking for the "Real" Jesus in Art and Archaeology - Part of a cyberguide for The Bronze Bow,  students research Jesus on an acclaimed NOVA site, and then search the National Gallery of Art for an image that they will use to illustrate an acrostic poem that they write. (PUSD standards included, grades 5 and up)

Who's That Knocking on Christmas Eve?  Written and illustrated by Jan Brett

Celebrations MiniUnit, Consumerism and Holidays - Suggested by Linda Foote, a unit in which students look at how much holidays are commercialized.

Winter Holidays Project - Lesson Plans for a great project on several winter holidays that give light.  From Teacher Vision, (Standards at McRel: http://www.mcrel.org/standards-benchmarks/  Knows the ways that families long ago expressed and transmitted their beliefs and values through oral tradition, literature, songs, art, religion, community celebrations, mementos, food, and language.  Knows how various American holidays reflect the shared values, principles, and beliefs of Americans, grades 3-6)

Classroom Traditions:

Ellie Taylor - International Potluck - Students make a flag from a country of their ancestry.  Additionally, they make a quilt square with symbols that represent traditions in their family.  On the day of the feast, each student brings in a crock pot with a dish from "their country" and the class has a feast and share their quilt squares. 

Michelle Manos, Debbie Sawyer -  Jingle Mingle - We take about 4 days to do 2 rotations per day in which students participate in different holiday activities within our mall.  These activities include art, reading, writing, and math activities.  AIMS integrated math

Christine Overson - Catmass Carols - We sing Christmas carols that have been rewritten to be about cats.  Wreck the Halls, Collar Bells are some of our favorites.  Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree your ornaments shine so temptingly...are a sample of the lyrics.
Secret Pals - we exchange secret pal gifts that must be school supplies.
