Online Shopping Spree

Here's the Story

The GOOD NEWS
Since you have worked SO hard this year babysitting, mowing lawns and pulling weeds, you have earned $10,000 for your holiday shopping!  (Not likely, but go with it.)

The BAD NEWS
You have been working so hard,  that you haven't had a chance to shop.  You need these gifts NOW!  Since you are so short on time, you will be shopping online and keeping track of your purchases using a spreadsheet program.

Think about:  Estimating, review of place value, finding an average, use of graphs, computer skills with spread sheets.

The Task:  Excel and the Web

1.   Open excel , the icon looks like the one on this book.  It is a green X.

2.   Put your name in the first cell (A1).

3.   Make a list of 5 loved ones for whom you will be shopping, number each one before you write their name.  Write them in the A column, starting with row 3.

4.   Estimate how much you can spend on each person and write that in the C column.

5.   Use online catalogs linked below to find items that you would like to purchase for each person.  Record the actual amount for the items that you chose, and tell what that item is under "The Gift I Chose". HURRY, you only have a few minutes to finish all of this shopping.  Multitask between the two programs to work more quickly.

6.   Total the actual amount and the estimated amounts using the sum function.

7.   Subtract to find out how much you have left over, which you will donate to your teacher's old age fund. IN the formula line type in =(B8-D8)

8.  Make at least one chart, using the chart wizard to graphically illustrate your shopping expenses.  (REMEMBER - to print you need to select the area that you need to print, then go to file> print area>set print area.)
